US Residents Lost Over $9B in Crypto Scams in 2024: FBI
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reported a staggering $9.32 billion lost to cryptocurrency scams in 2024, marking a 66% surge from the previous year. Total cybercrime losses reached $16.6 billion across 859,532 complaints, with crypto-related fraud accounting for the majority of financial damage.
Individuals aged 60 and older emerged as primary targets for crypto fraudsters. The IC3 received 149,686 digital asset-related complaints, reflecting growing vulnerabilities as adoption increases. This 25th anniversary report highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures and investor education in decentralized finance ecosystems.
